Over the past couple of years, there is a significant rise
in the free grocery delivery service. Whether it is Walmart, HEB, Amazon, or New Year free
grocery delivery, every grocery business seems to be looking for more
innovative ways to attract more consumers towards them. This is simply because
of the rise in competition in this specific industry with small and large
startups coming up every day.
Though most of these grocery businesses offer this free
delivery service to their prime members only as of now, it is not very far when
this will be rolled out for all customers. This will help them to beat the
competition and even help them to expand their grocery delivery business.
However, offering such a free delivery service does not come without its
standard and a fair bit of challenge. It is for this reason that the grocery
delivery businesses move with caution.
Rolled
out in phases:
The grocery stores, online or offline, is typically rolling
their free delivery concept in stages. This is because they want to see the
eventual result of such a roll out. For example, few grocery delivery stores
may offer free delivery to their premium customers only for grocery
delivery on New Year, while others may do it for a specific period
during the new year. Few other stores may also try this experiment out during
different times of the year, such as during festivities. Grocery stores also
experiment on their free delivery model of grocery items based on specific
locations. Most of the time, you will see that delivery is free within a geo
circle limit. It all depends on the profitability, rise in demand, increased in
the customer base as to how effective the experiment is and whether or not it
could be offered to all the general public.
Monthly
subscription fee:
Often grocery delivery businesses charge a subscription fee
every month from their customers to be considered as ‘premium’ and eligible for
such free delivery service. Others may follow the tech route and develop a
unique app that the customers need to download at a price or even for free to
enjoy the benefits of free online grocery delivery service. For example, Amazon
developed a Prime Now delivery app for the customers to enjoy their particular
Two-hour Whole Foods delivery service.
Few same day grocery
delivery businesses also followed suit taking a cue from such
marketplace giants. To enjoy these free services rolled out in phases, the
Prime members who have not ordered for groceries yet can make a request for an
invitation. However, there may be a minimum order requirement placed by the
grocers to enjoy such a free grocery delivery service. The value of the minimum
order requirement may vary from one specific grocer to another depending on the
service is available in particular regions and their business policies.
Changes
are expected to come:
There are slight or significant changes expected in the
grocery delivery business in the following couple of years, as the industry
experts say. Food or New Year
home grocery delivery will be made more comfortable and more
convenient for the customers who will be now able to order their requirements
through different sources and means apart from calling up or visiting their
website for shopping. They will now be able to request for their grocery items
on the go using the apps developed for this specific purpose. However, the new
customers will still have to wait for their invitation, especially when they
want to buy from large grocery chains and want the grocery items to be
delivered from the website or an app. Till the time that happens, they may have
to order their issues, at least a few of them, for a fee using these apps.
Therefore, such development for better customer experience is welcome.
